Diabetes is a very debilitating disease. This woman lost her leg to the disease. When she was discharged the hospital did not provide any equipment for her needs. She has a very limited income and could not afford to purchase or rent a wheelchair or bath bench to use at home. We stepped in and donated these items to her until she can receive help from Medicaid. She was so thankful. She did not know what she would have done without our help. Unfortunately now, many hospitals are releasing patients without the equipment they need, letting them languish for months until government insurance programs approve their needs.

We are seeing the breakdown of timely, appropriate and effective medical coverage by government insurance programs. When people cannot move around and function safely in their homes their medical conditions deteriorate and other serious complications befall them. It is becoming so very wasteful and destructive to people’s lives. A modest outlay for home equipment often prevents a much larger hospital bill, not to mention much suffering.
